Sadness in Detroit
In a story eerily reminiscent of Sedona, Yahoo reports:
The deaths of three runners who collapsed during a 13.1-mile half marathon appear to have been an aberration, but at least six runners have died while competing in such events in the last two months.
Autopsies were inconclusive Monday on the bodies of Rick Brown, 65, of Marietta, Ohio; Daniel Langdon, 36, of Laingsburg in central Michigan; and Jonathan Fenlon, 26, of Waterford, northwest of Detroit. The Wayne County medical examiner has requested toxicology tests.
The three died Sunday during or after running a half marathon at the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon. Brown and Langdon collapsed near the end of the race, and Fenlon died after crossing the finish line. Friends and family of the men said they had trained for the 13.1-mile race and were in great shape.

No Snow This Winter in Moscow

According to Time, Mayor Yury Luzhkov wants to have "the air force will use cement powder, dry ice or silver iodide to spray the clouds from Nov. 15 to March 15 — and only to prevent "very big and serious snow" from falling on the city, said Andrei Tsybin, the head of the department. This could mean that a few flakes will manage to slip through the cracks. Tsybin estimated that the total cost of keeping the storms at bay would be $6 million this winter, roughly half the amount Moscow normally spends to clear the streets of snow."
The Kicker? They are serious, according the article they do it every year to make sure it does not rain on City Day and Victory Day.

Big change at United Airlines - Hello Wendy
Patricia found this newsstory. Wendy Morse, a 777 captain just won election as Chair of the United Pilot's union. If you travel a lot, you want to keep a bit of an eye on United, American and Continental. And United has not been helped by "Captain Steve Wallach, the incumbent chair, who built on his reputation as a firebrand with his adversarial stance against United CEO Glenn Tilton."
Hopefully, the union and the company can work together going forward.

Water water everywhere
Read in the Union Tribune they are starting to put individual water meters in apartments here in San Diego. Four years of drought has really stressed California. They are considering tough legislation:
"The measure, Senate Bill 407, would force owners of most residential and commercial real estate built before 1994 to bring plumbing up to current requirements for water conservation. Homes would have to be in compliance by 2017; apartments and businesses would have until 2019. Anyone putting property on the market would have to make the upgrades before completing a sale. "
According to the Wall Street Journal: The key point of contention is the insistence by Mr. Schwarzenegger and GOP leaders on a bond measure for as much as $12 billion that would finance new dams and other water-infrastructure improvements.
Mr. Schwarzenegger has said the state needs more dams to help store water for its growing population. "We have been decades talking about water infrastructure, and we've got to bring it up to date," he told a conference of community-college trustees in San Francisco Thursday.
At the end of the day it is a consumption problem, you can help, simply modifying the way you take a shower can save 20 gallons of water a day. Treehugger has the following suggestion, "1) Low-flow showerheads like Bricor's shiny showerhead and this model from Gaiam (they used to be Real Goods: here's an updated link to purchase one) with a pause button cut back the flow to 1 gallon per minute (GPM), which, depending on your current shower, could save you two to four gallons each minute you're in the shower.2) The Aqua Helix takes it a step further, squeezing out just 1/2 GPM. "
Pat still takes showers like he did in the Navy, he gets wet, turns off the water, soaps up. Turns the water back on to rinse.

I don't do that, it is nice to have the water running when I shampoo so my hair does not tangle, but I do try to be sensitive to my water usage.

Obama Nobel Peace Prize
We both voted for Obama, this is NOT a criticism of the President of the United States. However, he has not done very much *yet* to create peace. Giving the award at this stage devalues the Nobel Laurets for all time. That is sad.
That said; President Obama, many times people rise to the level of expectations. We fully realize you have a LOT of expectations, but if you can earn this prize that is good for everyone!!!
According to The San Diego Press, "While Russia's president congratulated President Barack Obama for winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Republicans see the award as so outrageous that they're using it to raise campaign money."
So I looked into it, Michael Steele "found it so ridiculous that Obama was awarded the honor that he’s using it as a fundraising tool. Steele sent out an email late last night not only lampooning the award but asking “truly patriotic Americans” to ante up to fight the forces of world domination.
“The Democrats and their international leftist allies want America made subservient to the agenda of global redistribution and control,” Steele wrote. “And truly patriotic Americans like you and our Republican Party are the only thing standing in their way.”
What do Pat and Pat think? It was a bit odd, but we don't think it is the end of the world. I am a but concerned that to be truly patriotic you need to be anti-the-stitting U.S. President. That does not bode well for the Republican party I think and we need to be a two party nation.

A sauna-like sweat lodge at an Arizona resort meant to provide spiritual cleansing became the scene of a police investigation Friday when more than a dozen people became ill during a two-hour session and two later died.
In all, 21 of the 64 people crowded inside the sweat lodge Thursday evening received medical care at hospitals and a fire station. Four remained hospitalized Friday evening — one in critical condition and the others in fair condition.
The particpants paid about 9k for the experience apiece. James Arthur Ray, had posted "Still in Spiritual Warrior ... for anything new to live something first must die. What needs to die in you so that new life can emerge?" a few hours before the deaths.
From now on, when you read that warning on a hot tub etc, pay attention. When ever you read about heat waves, you also read about heat deaths; be safe.

Programmers are Tiny Gods

So if you’re working with a programmer, you have to treat him or her like a God. You have to pray. You cannot issue edicts. You have to come on bended knee. “Here’s the problem I have. I need a solution. Please help.”
The good news is, programmers want their work to be used, and the good ones know that the design matters. So programmers and designers actually have the same goal: getting the stuff used. If each can honor the talents of the other, great things can happen.
Goes at least double for web designers. I enjoy posting a blog a lot more than trying to get my web page updated.

Root:1 Cabernet Sauvignon
Tried this with my partner tonight, the bottle is unique, the label is painted on and it is a grapevine with a root sticking deep into the ground. Earthy and better than I expected for a Chilean wine. Pairs well with Ahi Sliders.
Recipe for Ahi sliders:
1/2 pound of fresh Ahi Tuna
10 Fresh basil leaves
2 Tsp pasta sauce
1 Tsp parmesan cheese
3 pinch salt
1 dash cayene pepper
Put everything but Ahi in food processor, mix well. Add and lightly food process Ahi, do not grind into oblivion. Form pattie, cook in skillet like any other slider. Serve on flat bread. Yummm.
